How I Ate Pizza, Pasta, and Gelato Every Day in Italy… and Came Home With a Six-Pack
September 10, 2025
This summer, I spent two and a half weeks in Italy with my family. Every single day included pizza, pasta, and gelato—and I still came home with a visible six-pack.
No crash diets. No crazy restrictions. Just the exact principles I teach my clients inside my coaching programs: my Signature LEAD System and the Moderation365 Nutrition Curriculum.
Because here’s the truth: you can enjoy food on vacation, stay fit while traveling, and feel confident in your bikini if you have the right tools.
How to Stay Fit While Traveling in Italy
Most people assume vacation means weight gain. But when you know how to fuel your body and practice moderation, you can stay in shape on vacation and even come home leaner. Here’s exactly how I approached meals, movement, and mindset while traveling in Italy.
Healthy Hotel Breakfasts in Italy: Fuel First
Our hotels included massive breakfast buffets—everything from bacon and eggs to Nutella crepes and Belgian waffles. While it was tempting to pile my plate high, I leaned on a simple framework: protein + fiber + healthy carbs.
Most mornings looked like Greek yogurt with fruit and muesli. Sometimes I’d grab a croissant with Nutella for the experience, but I noticed it didn’t leave me feeling my best. That’s a huge part of Moderation365: paying attention to how food makes you feel, then making choices accordingly. This is one of my favourite nutrition tips for Italy vacations: enjoy the unique foods, but balance them with meals that keep your energy stable.
Light and Fresh Italian Lunches
Lunch was often a caprese salad with buffalo mozzarella, tomatoes, olive oil, and balsamic, plus a slice of bread.
If I was still hungry, I’d have a piece of my kids’ pizza or burger leftovers (there are no kid’s meals in Italy, so portions were generous). No guilt. No “I blew it.” Just satisfaction and balance.
Can You Eat Pizza and Pasta Every Day in Italy? Absolutely.
At dinner, I almost always ordered pizza or pasta. Meat and fish dishes were pricier (and less appealing to me, hello fish with skin and eyeballs), while pizza and pasta were worth savouring.
And yes—gelato nearly every single day. Shared with my family, enjoyed fully, and never regretted.
I also packed protein bars for afternoons since restaurants often don’t open until 7 or 7:30 pm. This little travel hack helped me avoid getting overly hungry before dinner and caving for chips with the rest of the family.
Travel Fitness: How I Worked Out in Italy
We walked 10,000–13,000 steps a day, which covered my cardio. I also hit the hotel gym 2–4 times a week for about 50 minutes:
•2 trisets of lower, upper, and core
•3 sets of 15 reps
•Compound lifts to maintain strength
The goal wasn’t to crush workouts—it was to stay consistent with the “L” in LEAD: Lifting Heavy. Even while traveling, a simple workout routine can help you feel stronger, keep energy high, and support fat loss.
Moderation365: Nutrition Principles That Work Anywhere
Here are the exact Daily Nutritional Commitments (DNCs) I leaned on:
•Ask: Does this meal contain protein? (without obsessing over hitting 30g every time)
•Balance meals with protein, carbs, and fat when possible
•Prioritize hydration (bottled water, hydration packs, and Coke Zero as my “vacation drink”)
•BAS: Big Ass Salad every day
Hydration and protein were lower than at home, but I didn’t stress about it. That’s the beauty of the Moderation365 approach: it teaches you how to stay consistent without needing extremes, even on vacation.
Why Food Feels Different in Italy
One thing I noticed: food in Italy is so much “cleaner” than in North America—fewer additives, fillers, and dyes. Even people who are gluten-intolerant at home can often enjoy pizza, pasta, and bread in Italy. Sodas have less sugar and no high-fructose corn syrup.
Culturally, Italians also don’t focus as much on weight training or protein. But people walk more, savour meals, and live the dolce vita. Less deprivation, less “all or nothing,” and naturally, less overeating. Moderation in practice.
My Results: A Six-Pack and Zero Deprivation
I came home without gaining a pound. In fact, my six-pack was more visible than before. But more importantly—I never felt deprived.
This is the power of Moderation365 and my Signature LEAD System:
•Lift Heavy
•Eat Sufficient Protein
•Adequate Hydration
•Do Enjoyable Cardio
When you combine these with moderation, mindfulness, abundance mindset, and daily nutritional commitments, you can eat pizza and pasta every day in Italy, enjoy gelato, and still stay fit while traveling.
